Saint Paul Fire & EMS Blotter for June 30, 2010
During the week of June 23 thru June 29, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 642 emergency calls. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.
LIGHTNING STRIKE - On June 23 at 2:15 p.m. on the 1900 block of Burns Avenue a lightning strike caused a fire on an apartment balcony. Damage is estimated at $1,500.
RESTAURANT FIRE - On June 25 at 9:52 p.m. on the 600 block of University Avenue West a fire in a restaurant's deep fryer's electrical panel and interior caused damage estimated at $5,000. The fire was extinguished by employees who activated the hood system.
LIGHTING STRIKE - A three story house was hit by lightning on June 25 at 7:18 p.m. on the 200 block of Howell. Lightning hit a transformer then went into the house through the electrical and telephone system. There was a small fire on the 3rd floor where the lightning exited the corner bead of a sheet rocked wall and ignited a couch. Damage is estimated at $1,100.
DWELLING FIRE - On June 26 at 9:30 p.m. on the 900 block of Edgerton fire companies responded to the scene of a fire in a single family dewelling. The house was being renovated. Crews found paper, saw dust, rags and other items swept in a pile on the kitchen floor at the origin of the fire. Damage is estimated at $5,500.
PEDESTRIAN STRUCK - On June 26 at 9:09 p.m. a 31 year old male was found unconscious in the median by paramedics on Sibley Street and Warner Road after being struck by a vehicle going 45 mph. Paramedics transported him to a near by hospital.
INDUSTRIAL FIRE - On June 26 at 6:09 p.m. on the 1600 block of Red Rock Road, sixty tons of molten metal from a furnace was placed in a cooling pot (as is procedure). However, the company normally has a crane on duty to place the metal back in the furance, but the crane was not operating and the molten metal had been burning for a day and a half and was causing concern as flames were showing. Fire crews were called in to cool the metal. In the process, a firefighter was overcome by heat exhaustion and transported to the hospital.
LIGHTING STRIKE – Fire Crews were called to the 600 block of Cretin Avenue South where a two story vacant apartment building had fire showing from the 2nd floor window on June 27 at 9:42 p.m. Lighting struck the building igniting framing to the window and wall. Damage is estimated at $8,000.
JUVENILE PLAYING WITH FIRE - On June 27 at 9:50 p.m. on the 400 block of Hazel a juvenile playing with matches was referred to the fire department's Fire Play Intervention Program.

BURNS - On June 27 at 9:23 p.m. on the 400 block of VanBuren Avenue a 17 year old female suffered burns to her lower extremities after having hot grease spilled on her.
DRYER FIRE - On June 28 at 12:16 a.m. on the 900 block of Front an occupant was awakened by another occupant who smelled smoke coming from the basement. She had been drying clothes in her dryer approximately one hour prior. She notified other occupants, evacuated and called 9-1-1. Damage is estimated at $1,500.
· There were no operable smoke detectors in this home, so it's just lucky that they woke up to the smell of smoke at 16 minutes past midnight. Inoperable smoke detectors are leading factosr in fire deaths in Saint Paul. Be sure you have smoke detectors and test them at least monthly. Homeowners can get free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors by participating in our new Safe Haven self-inspection program by calling the Saint Paul Fire Department at 651-228-6273.
STABBING - On June 29 at 7:00 a.m. on the 300 block of Maria Avenue a 31 year old male was stabbed during a domestic. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital.
TV FALLS ON CHILD - On June 29 at 8:44 p.m. a 3 year old male was transported to a near by hospital after a TV fell on him on the 1600 block of Eustis Street.
NEAR DROWNING – Paramedics were dispatched to the scene on June 29 at 5:08 p.m. where a 14 year old male on the 1400 block of Albemarle Street was found in the deep end of the apartment complex pool. He was pulled from the pool by bystanders and began CPR. Paramedics treated him and the boy was talking on arrival to the hospital.

This feature is called "Fire & EMS Blotter" is a weekly update of the activities of the Saint Paul Fire Department.
During the week of June 16 thru June 22, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 676 emergency calls. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.
ARSON FIRE – An arsonist set fire to a trash container next to a garage in the 1000 block of Dale St. N. at 12:47a on June 16. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming through the roof of the large two-car garage the fire spread to a shed and three other garages. No one was injured.
MULTIPLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT - On June 16 at 10:34 p.m. a 69 year old male was involved in a front end collision on Hamline Avenue North and Pierce Butler Rte. Paramedics treated him at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital after firefighters extricated him from his vehicle. He was wearing his seatbelt. A 63 year old male involved in this collision suffered a heart attack and died at the scene. A 71 year old female was evaluated at the scene. She refused transport.
PEDESTRIAN STRUCK – On June 17 at 3:45 p.m., a 20 year old female was struck by a vehicle as she was crossing University Avenue & Curfew Street. Paramedics treated her at the scene and transported her to the hospital for further evaluation.
CARELESSLY DISCARDED SMOKERS' MATERIAL – One June 18 at 8:35 a.m. on the 800 block of Rose Avenue East, the Communication Center received a report from a passerby that smoke was coming from the front porch of a vacant house being remodeled. Crews ventilated smoke from inside of the house and extinguished the fire. Area of origin was located on the front porch in a plastic garbage bag. Crews used an extinguisher to put the fire out. Inside the garbage bag was smoking materials, empty cigarette boxes, sawdust, varnish and other chemicals used for finishing wood floors. Fire is ruled accidental. Damage is estimated at $3,000.
PEDESTRIAN STRUCK - On June 18 at 2:08 p.m., a wheelchair-bound 59 year old male sustained injuries at Carleton Street and University Avenue West. He was hit by a motor vehicle while he was crossing the street. Paramedics treated him at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital.
ELEVATOR RESCUE – Firefighters responded to rescue victims trapped in an elevator in the 500 block of Snelling Ave. N. on June 18 at 5:54p. There were no injuries.
FIRE STATION WINDOW BROKEN - On June 20 on the 30 block of Concord Street, a rock was thrown through an exterior window of Fire Station No. 6. Damage is estimated at $200.
ROLL OVER – On June 20 at 5:04 a.m. a 24 year old male was involved in a single car roll over accident on the freeway. He was seat belted hanging upside down. He was extricated from the vehicle. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital.

During the week of June 9 thru June 15, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 656 emergency calls. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.
FALL - On June 9 at 10:44 a.m. paramedics responded to the 1600 block of Minnehaha Avenue East where a 37 year old male fell approximately 18 feet after the railing gave way. The patient was treated and transported to a nearby hospital.
CUT - On June 10 at 5:22 a.m. on Snelling Avenue No. & Spruce Tree Avenue a 28 year old male was found with a facial laceration. He was treated at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital.
BICYCLIST STRUCK - On June 10 at 10:30 p.m. on Summit and Wheeler Street North a 19 year old female was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle. She was treated at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital.
COMMERCIAL BUILDING FIRE - On June 12 at 2206 hrs on the 2400 block of University Avenue West, an alarm company notified the 9-1-1 Communications Center reporting the fire alarm activated. When a fire company arrived, nothing was visible from the outside, but when they entered the building, they reported light haze.
They found the sprinkler had activated in a General Contractor's work shop. The sprinkler held the fire to the area of origin and firefighters completed extinguishment. Damage is estimated at $3,000.
ROLLOVER ACCIDENT – A 39 year old female sustained injuries after her vehicle rolled over on Berland Place and McKnight Road South and hit a home on June 13. She was extricated from the vehicle, treated for her injuries, and transported to a nearby hospital.
CHILDBIRTH – Paramedics raced to the scene where a baby girl was born prior to their arrival on June 13 at 3:29 p.m. on the 190 block of Biglow Lane. A 34 year old female, along with her new born were transported to a nearby hospital.
DRYER FIRE - On June 14 at 9:52 p.m. on the 2300 block of Ellis Avenue a fire company was dispatched to check on a fire that was put out. The resident's son was drying clothes when he smelled smoke and heard his dog barking. Upon investigation he saw small flames inside the clothes dryer.
He used the dog's water bowl to extinguish the fire, than ran outside, grabbed the garden hose to finish extinguishing. Metal from damaged dryer drum fell onto clothing causing cloths to burn. Damage is estimated at $300.
KITCHEN FIRE - On June 15 at 5:30 p.m. on the 1400 block of Laurel Avenue the owner was reading, could smell smoke, went downstairs into the kitchen and saw fire under sink with several small fires on floor around room. She exited the home and called 9-1-1. Fire confined to the kitchen. This fire is accidental in nature. Damage is estimated at $7,000.
ARSON GARAGE FIRE - On June 16 at 12:46 a.m. firefighters were called to the 1000 block of Dale Street North where the homeowner was awakened by their alarm system activation from the garage, looked out the window to see flames through the roof and called 9-1-1. The fire started in a wheeled trash container. Two vehicles parked in the garage sustained damage along with a storage shed and 3 detached garages. The fire was intentionally set. Total estimated damage is $57,500.
COMMUNITY EVENTS – Fire department staff participated in five community events, including block parties, a Fun Night, and Head Start programs.
