During the week of June 23 thru June 29, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 642 emergency calls. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.

LIGHTNING STRIKE - On June 23 at 2:15 p.m. on the 1900 block of Burns Avenue a lightning strike caused a fire on an apartment balcony. Damage is estimated at $1,500.

RESTAURANT FIRE - On June 25 at 9:52 p.m. on the 600 block of University Avenue West a fire in a restaurant's deep fryer's electrical panel and interior caused damage estimated at $5,000. The fire was extinguished by employees who activated the hood system.

LIGHTING STRIKE - A three story house was hit by lightning on June 25 at 7:18 p.m. on the 200 block of Howell. Lightning hit a transformer then went into the house through the electrical and telephone system. There was a small fire on the 3rd floor where the lightning exited the corner bead of a sheet rocked wall and ignited a couch. Damage is estimated at $1,100.

DWELLING FIRE - On June 26 at 9:30 p.m. on the 900 block of Edgerton fire companies responded to the scene of a fire in a single family dewelling. The house was being renovated. Crews found paper, saw dust, rags and other items swept in a pile on the kitchen floor at the origin of the fire. Damage is estimated at $5,500.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK - On June 26 at 9:09 p.m. a 31 year old male was found unconscious in the median by paramedics on Sibley Street and Warner Road after being struck by a vehicle going 45 mph. Paramedics transported him to a near by hospital.

INDUSTRIAL FIRE - On June 26 at 6:09 p.m. on the 1600 block of Red Rock Road, sixty tons of molten metal from a furnace was placed in a cooling pot (as is procedure). However, the company normally has a crane on duty to place the metal back in the furance, but the crane was not operating and the molten metal had been burning for a day and a half and was causing concern as flames were showing. Fire crews were called in to cool the metal. In the process, a firefighter was overcome by heat exhaustion and transported to the hospital.

LIGHTING STRIKE – Fire Crews were called to the 600 block of Cretin Avenue South where a two story vacant apartment building had fire showing from the 2nd floor window on June 27 at 9:42 p.m. Lighting struck the building igniting framing to the window and wall. Damage is estimated at $8,000.

JUVENILE PLAYING WITH FIRE - On June 27 at 9:50 p.m. on the 400 block of Hazel a juvenile playing with matches was referred to the fire department's Fire Play Intervention Program.

BURNS - On June 27 at 9:23 p.m. on the 400 block of VanBuren Avenue a 17 year old female suffered burns to her lower extremities after having hot grease spilled on her.

DRYER FIRE - On June 28 at 12:16 a.m. on the 900 block of Front an occupant was awakened by another occupant who smelled smoke coming from the basement. She had been drying clothes in her dryer approximately one hour prior. She notified other occupants, evacuated and called 9-1-1. Damage is estimated at $1,500.

·   There were no operable smoke detectors in this home, so it's just lucky that they woke up to the smell of smoke at 16 minutes past midnight. Inoperable smoke detectors are leading factosr in fire deaths in Saint Paul. Be sure you have smoke detectors and test them at least monthly. Homeowners can get free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors by participating in our new Safe Haven self-inspection program by calling the Saint Paul Fire Department at 651-228-6273.

STABBING - On June 29 at 7:00 a.m. on the 300 block of Maria Avenue a 31 year old male was stabbed during a domestic. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital.

TV FALLS ON CHILD - On June 29 at 8:44 p.m. a 3 year old male was transported to a near by hospital after a TV fell on him on the 1600 block of Eustis Street.

NEAR DROWNING – Paramedics were dispatched to the scene on June 29 at 5:08 p.m. where a 14 year old male on the 1400 block of Albemarle Street was found in the deep end of the apartment complex pool. He was pulled from the pool by bystanders and began CPR. Paramedics treated him and the boy was talking on arrival to the hospital.
