WEEKLY SAINT PAUL FIRE & EMS BLOTTER

This feature is called "Fire & EMS Blotter" is a weekly update of the activities of the Saint Paul Fire Department.

During the week of June 16 thru June 22, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 676 emergency calls. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.

ARSON FIRE – An arsonist set fire to a trash container next to a garage in the 1000 block of Dale St. N. at 12:47a on June 16. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming through the roof of the large two-car garage the fire spread to a shed and three other garages. No one was injured.

MULTIPLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT - On June 16 at 10:34 p.m. a 69 year old male was involved in a front end collision on Hamline Avenue North and Pierce Butler Rte. Paramedics treated him at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital after firefighters extricated him from his vehicle. He was wearing his seatbelt. A 63 year old male involved in this collision suffered a heart attack and died at the scene. A 71 year old female was evaluated at the scene. She refused transport.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK – On June 17 at 3:45 p.m., a 20 year old female was struck by a vehicle as she was crossing University Avenue & Curfew Street. Paramedics treated her at the scene and transported her to the hospital for further evaluation.

CARELESSLY DISCARDED SMOKERS' MATERIAL – One June 18 at 8:35 a.m. on the 800 block of Rose Avenue East, the Communication Center received a report from a passerby that smoke was coming from the front porch of a vacant house being remodeled. Crews ventilated smoke from inside of the house and extinguished the fire. Area of origin was located on the front porch in a plastic garbage bag. Crews used an extinguisher to put the fire out. Inside the garbage bag was smoking materials, empty cigarette boxes, sawdust, varnish and other chemicals used for finishing wood floors. Fire is ruled accidental. Damage is estimated at $3,000.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK - On June 18 at 2:08 p.m., a wheelchair-bound 59 year old male sustained injuries at Carleton Street and University Avenue West. He was hit by a motor vehicle while he was crossing the street. Paramedics treated him at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital.

ELEVATOR RESCUE – Firefighters responded to rescue victims trapped in an elevator in the 500 block of Snelling Ave. N. on June 18 at 5:54p. There were no injuries.

FIRE STATION WINDOW BROKEN - On June 20 on the 30 block of Concord Street, a rock was thrown through an exterior window of Fire Station No. 6. Damage is estimated at $200.

ROLL OVER – On June 20 at 5:04 a.m. a 24 year old male was involved in a single car roll over accident on the freeway. He was seat belted hanging upside down. He was extricated from the vehicle. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital.
